Accelerating distributed simulation implementation

using MATLAB & Simulink

Welcome to this first issue of our HLA products newsletter providing up-to-date information about the use of HLA with MATLAB and Simulink.

ForwardSim HLA Toolbox & HLA Blockset are providing additional capabilities to MATLAB and Simulink for the implementation and execution of distributed simulation;

  • Building distributed simulation with MATLAB & Simulink
  • Rapidly convert your existing MATLAB models to HLA federates
  • Connecting MATLAB & Simulink models to any HLA compliant application

HLA Toolbox 3.0 - now available

The HLA Toolbox is the MATLAB® interface to the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard for distributed simulation. It provides both ways communications between MATLAB and the Runtime Infrastructure (RTI). The HLA Toolbox improves organization efficiency to participate in multinational simulations or to implement distributed simulations locally. The HLA Toolbox is compliant with HLA 1.3, IEEE 1516 and IEEE 1516-2010 (HLA Evolved) and supports commercial and open sources RTI's (pRTI, MAK RTI, RTI-NG PRO®, PORTICO, CERTI, DMSO ...).

The graphical user interface (GUI) is used to generate the required m-files to build a federate template that can be entirely customized to meet your project requirements. It also provides a great way to visualize the Federation Object Model (FOM) allowing easy specification of the published and subscribed Objects and Interactions.

The HLA Toolbox enables the use of MATLAB® at the federate development level. It takes care of the simulation implementation giving the end user more time to work on its model. The use of MATLAB and the HLA Toolbox significantly reduce the implementation time of HLA compliant models compared to Java and C++.

HLA Blockset 2.1

The HLA Blockset™ is a Simulink® block library specifically designed for the integration of High Level Architecture (HLA) services into Simulink®. The HLA Blockset provides both ways communications between Simulink and the RTI.

Simulink models can be connected to a distributed simulation using any of the HLA standards HLA 1.3, IEEE 1516 or IEEE 1516-2010 (HLA Evolved) and supports commercial and open sources RTI's (pRTI, MAK RTI, RTI-NG PRO®, PORTICO, CERTI, DMSO ...).

The same graphical user interface as the HLA Toolbox is used to configure the "Initialize" block establishing the connection with the RTI.

FOM Add-on

Providing efficient capability to work with complex FOM like the RPR FOM, ForwardSim FOM Add-on eliminates the time required to understand the FOM structure. The FOM Add-on graphical user interface displays FOM Object and Interaction hierarchy to facilitate complex data structure manipulation. All Objects and Interactions of the FOM are mapped into an object-oriented style class hierarchy that can be customized by the end user.

High level functions and classes have been created to facilitate data encoding and decoding using automatic code generation. The FOM Add-on enables the end user to speed up even more its HLA federate implementation.

SISO Smackdown 2012

As a sponsor of the SISO Smackdown for the second year along with NASA, Pitch and MAK, ForwardSim provided software licenses to the different university teams allowing them to quickly get up to speed with HLA using the HLA Toolbox GUI, code generation and integrated HLA standard documentation.

ForwardSim in collaboration with UAH improved the 3D viewer built with MATLAB and Simulink 3D Animation last year in order to add satellite communication opportunity visualization. All physical entities displayed were generated from the different teams sending location data to the 3D viewer on the network. SISO Smackdown
